Athletics / Train hard. Spend smarter.

Gear that earns its place in your gym bag.

The headphones, earbuds, and watches we would shortlist for working out—with the reasons to buy, the reasons to wait, and the price that makes sense.

The shortlist

Gym headphones

Prefer over-ears? Start here—but we would choose sport earbuds for frequent, sweaty cardio. A sweat rating and replaceable pads matter more than a celebrity endorsement.

Beats 360 over-ear headphones

Our over-ear pick—on sale

1. Beats 360

$349.99 listed · Buy target: $300 or less

Why it makes the listIPX4 resistance and replaceable cushions make these a more practical workout option. Our owner liked the physical upgrade and bass and got a full day of everyday use.

The tradeoffThe lows and mids disappointed. At $350, we do not think the sound earns the price. Over-ear cups can also trap heat; try the fit during movement before committing.

Why only one over-ear pick? The JBL / Under Armour Project Rock listing we checked was refurbished and sold out. Its IPX4 rating and removable washable cushions are useful, but we would not send you chasing old stock at inflated prices just to fill a list.

The shortlist

Workout earbuds

Our starting point for most gym-goers: a secure fit without spending headphone money. Ear hooks help retention, but no design fits every ear. Buy from a seller with a usable return policy.

Soundcore Sport X20 earbuds with adjustable hooks
Manufacturer image: Anker soundcore. Color and band options may vary.

Best value starting point

1. Soundcore Sport X20

$69.99 at Best Buy · Buy target: $80 or less

Why it makes the listAdjustable ear hooks, ANC, and IP68-rated earbuds make this a sensible gym shortlist pick without a premium price. Soundcore claims up to 12 hours per charge or 48 with the case in normal mode; ANC reduces runtime.

The tradeoffWe have not tested the sound or ANC against the premium alternatives. Fit and seal still determine comfort and isolation. The IP rating is not permission to swim with them.

Black Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds and charging case
Manufacturer image: Beats. Color and band options may vary.

Premium ear-hook option

2. Powerbeats Pro 2

$239.99 at Best Buy · Wait for $200 or less

Why it makes the listEar hooks, physical volume controls, ANC, and Apple H2 integration make these worth considering if fit and iPhone convenience are your priorities. Android support is available through the Beats app. Earbuds are IPX4-rated.

The tradeoffA substantial premium over the X20. Heart-rate features depend on supported apps and equipment; do not pay extra assuming they replace your watch. Our $200 target is a buying threshold, not a current sale.

Fitness watches

Pick your phone ecosystem and charging tolerance first. Most people do not need an $800 watch to log workouts. These are use-case picks, not a lab-tested accuracy ranking.

Amazfit Active 2 Round watch with orange sport band
Manufacturer image: Amazfit. Color and band options may vary.

Budget fitness shortlist

1. Amazfit Active 2 (Round)

Black standard model: $99.99 listed · Sold out at Best Buy

Why it makes the listA practical entry point if basic workout logging and less frequent charging matter more than a large app ecosystem. Amazfit advertises up to 10 days under its typical-use conditions.

The tradeoffHeavy use and GPS reduce battery life. We have not independently verified sensor accuracy. Choose the standard sport-band version for value; a premium finish will not improve your workout.

Apple Watch SE 3 with purple band; band options vary
Manufacturer image: Apple. Color and band options may vary.

Everyday iPhone value pick

2. Apple Watch SE 3

GPS 40mm Midnight S/M: $219 listed · Unavailable at Best Buy

Why it makes the listThe lower-cost Apple Watch route for people who want workouts and everyday iPhone integration. Start with the GPS version if you normally carry your phone; cellular adds hardware and potential service costs.

The tradeoffRequires a compatible iPhone. Check Apple's current phone and software requirements before ordering. Choose an Ultra only when its extra capabilities solve an actual problem for you.

Apple Watch Ultra 4
Manufacturer image: Apple. Color and band options may vary.

Premium battery pick for iPhone

3. Apple Watch Ultra 4

$800 paid by our owner · Early owner score: 77/100

Why it makes the listOur owner got three days from 100% to 0%, reported fast charging and no speed or reliability issues, and rated comfort 7/10 depending on the band. Battery life was the standout improvement.

The tradeoffKeep a working Ultra 2 or Ultra 3. Ultra 1 owners have more reason to consider it, but $800 remains a large spend. Tracking felt more accurate to our owner; that is an impression, not a controlled accuracy result.

How we choose gym tech

We prioritize secure fit, manufacturer-rated sweat protection, practical controls, maintenance, phone compatibility, and total cost. Manufacturer specifications were checked October 5, 2026. Best Buy offers for Sport X20, Powerbeats Pro 2, Active 2 and SE 3 were checked October 12: Best Buy was the seller for each; the earbuds showed Add to Cart, while both watches were unavailable. Other owner-review prices are historical. Prices can change; buying targets are our thresholds, not promises of a sale.

Unreviewed products are research-based recommendations with no invented test scores. Manufacturer battery figures describe specific test conditions, not our results. Our two owner reviews reflect individual experience rather than a side-by-side laboratory test.

Try head movement, a warm-up, and a bench position during the return window. For earbuds, try every tip size. Sweat resistance does not make a device shower-proof; follow its care instructions and dry it before charging. For watch comparisons, weigh comfort and charging routine before headline sensor counts.
