What changed

Noise cancellation reaches the entry model.

Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, with store availability beginning September 18. Both versions include Active Noise Cancellation. U.S. launch pricing is $129 for the standard model and $149 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Apple's launch announcement.

Our buying take: if you have already decided to replace your earbuds and like this open-ear fit, the $149 version is the more interesting option. Its name undersells the differences. The extra $20 buys convenience you may use every day, but a working pair you already own remains the cheapest choice.

For someone constantly reaching for a phone to change volume, a control on the earbud is a practical gain. Likewise, a longer listening window matters more on a commute or a long call than a charging case's total capacity. Think about the longest stretch you actually listen without putting your earbuds away.

Our recommendation

Choose around your routine.

The $149 model makes sense if…

You are buying now, use earbuds daily, and expect the extra controls or listening time to remove a recurring annoyance. We would prioritize those benefits over the wireless charging feature alone.

Stay at $129—or keep yours—if…

Your listening sessions are short, you prefer a cable, and phone-based volume controls do not bother you. A small upgrade cost is still unnecessary spending when you will not use what it buys.

For current AirPods owners, start with fit, reliability, and battery condition. Do not replace a comfortable, dependable pair just because a new generation arrived. If you dislike the fit of your current earbuds, try the new design and check the retailer's opened-earbud return policy before treating any specification as a solution.

Claims versus experience

The noise-cancellation claim needs listening tests.

Apple claims up to 50% more noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is the manufacturer's comparison, not a result we have replicated, and it does not mean every sound will seem half as loud. We have not tested audio quality, fit, microphone performance, or ANC on these earbuds. Apple's claim and test notes.

Live Translation also has requirements: compatible hardware, current software and firmware, Apple Intelligence enabled, and supported languages and regions. Check those conditions for the phone you own before paying for a feature you expect to use abroad. Compatibility and availability.

Value call

The better model can still be an unnecessary purchase.

The $149 model is our provisional preference for someone already shopping for this style of AirPods. For an owner with earbuds that work well, our advice is simpler: wait until the new pair solves an actual problem. This is buying analysis based on published specifications, not a scored review.
