What Microsoft announced
In its September 8, 2026 update, Microsoft says Family approvals for screen time, app access, and purchases now respond faster. It also reports broader app coverage in activity reporting, corrected funding-balance updates, and easier family-group management for adults.
The company says the fixes are available in the latest Family Safety mobile apps on iOS and Android, with access also available on the web. It acknowledges that some families may still encounter issues and says further usage-time accuracy improvements are coming. These are Microsoft’s statements; we have not independently tested the fixes.

Why this matters on an ordinary school night
A parental-control feature is only useful when the child’s device and the parent’s approval agree. A delayed response can look like a denied request, and an incomplete activity report can lead to the wrong conversation about how a computer was used. These practical fixes deserve attention even without new hardware.
Our advice is to check the setup together rather than assuming an update has corrected every device. Explain what is being monitored and how requests work. A technical setting supports a household agreement; it cannot replace one.

A short check parents can do together
- Update the Family Safety app using the official app store, then confirm the intended family group and accounts.
- With the child present, try a small screen-time extension and check whether the approved change takes effect on the correct device.
- Review a familiar app’s activity entry together. If it looks wrong, document the discrepancy rather than treating the report as unquestionable.
- Check the displayed wallet balance against your existing purchase history. You do not need to make a new purchase just to test reporting.
- If a problem remains, note the device, app version, approximate time, and what each screen showed before contacting Microsoft through its official support routes.

Use the update before considering a new device
This is a software-service update, not a reason to replace a working family laptop. First see whether it resolves the specific problem you were experiencing. If you are shopping anyway, check the apps your household uses and the account setup before focusing on AI branding or premium materials.
We would revisit this story with a documented parent-and-child test before assigning any reliability verdict. For now, it is a useful update to try, with clear limits on what has been independently verified.
